Common Essential Oils and their Magical Uses:
Essential oils offer so many benefits, and if you’re into making your own remedies and products then they will become essential to you!
Rosemary is one of those staples that you should always have handy. It is the jack-of-all-trades of herbs, and the essential oil is no different. Not only does it smell wonderful, but you can substitute it for pretty much anything else that you might not have. Rosemary essential oil is used to attract love, and clear and sharpen the mind. It is uplifting and repels negative energies, which makes it great for protection spells. It is great for improving memory or making yourself more memorable. Try sprinkling a drop or two on your resume when you go to an interview.
That’s not all it can do! Rosemary has great anti-fungal, antiseptic, antibacterial, and pain-relieving properties. If you have scalp issues like dandruff, or you’re trying to grow healthy hair faster, massage your scalp with some rosemary oil. It reduces puffiness on skin. Just make sure your skin isn’t sensitive to it first, or dilute it before applying to areas like around your eyes. Rosemary is also great for relieving headaches.
What magical practitioner doesn’t have lavender around? Lavender essential oil is a wonderful healing oil that also aids in protection, prosperity, and attracting elves. (Who doesn’t love elves?) Lavender is well known for drawing love, creating calm and relaxation, and helping with sleep. It’s also great for sinus problems, and when rubbed on the temples can help relieve a headache. The cool thing about lavender oil is that you can flavor food and drinks with it! Make some lavender-flavored cookies to offer, or add some of the oil to smoothies for a delicious, relaxing smoothie-potion (one of my favorite kinds of potions!) I sprinkle lavender oil on the bed whenever I change the sheets to chase away nightmares and attract deep, relaxing sleep. Since it’s also great for protection and prosperity, this is a great one to anoint candles with or wear during a day you expect to be stressful.
If lavender oil is the nice, soothing warm blanket at the end of the night to help you relax and sleep, then peppermint oil is your morning cup of coffee! Peppermint is uplifting and awakening. Use it for things that need a little more energy and liveliness. This is a great one if you’ve been dancing around bonfires all night and still have to get up in the morning. Peppermint oil protects from negative thoughts, which is essential not just when working magic, but for going about your day. As a pain reliever, peppermint oil rubbed on the temples helps relieve headaches, and also helps sore, achy muscles when rubbed on the area. It’s also great for upset stomachs when added to teas. Peppermint and rose oils work surprisingly well together, especially for changing negative self-talk or helping with body image issues.
Frankincense essential oil smells clean and uplifting— perfect for a sanctifying oil. It’s associated with the sun, which makes sense, as it’s an enlightening oil for spiritual awareness and growth. This is a great one for protection and purification and is commonly used in exorcism magic. If you have a nasty ghost problem, use this! Also, frankincense is perfect for consecrating your tools or altars. It’s also antiseptic and can help fight blemishes and scars. Use a little mixed with your face cleansing oil. (As always and with anything you put right on your skin, test it first to make sure you don’t have a reaction.) Be careful ingesting this one. For a few people, it can cause an upset stomach.
